What about modifying FRS radios? Cheap, reliable, available.

FRS radios (those small "walkie-talkie" types that sell for $35 a pair at Walmart and elsewhere) could be modified to create a trigger setup. some advantages are:

Long range (up to 5 mile, so 1000' should be a cinch)
Frequencies are already FCC approved.
Have 16+ channels .
Are durable as hell (mine are anyway).
require no license.
cheap ($10 to $30 per unit for good ones)

would need only to send a signal of some sort and use a relay on the receiver to trigger.
